The Law
If you are unsure how to check your tyres, call into our workshop and we can check them for you. You can also watch this video which takes you through checking the tread depth and how it can affect a tyres performance.
The legal limit for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the centre 3/4 of the tread around the circumference of the whole tyre. Tyres have wear markers moulded into the grooves of the tread and when these markers are the same level as the tyre tread the tyre requires replacing.
Driving with low tread increases the chance of tyre failure and also you will have less control over the vehicle. Motorists caught with tread below the legal limit are also at risk of a fine and penalty points being imposed on their licence. Usually a £60 fine and 3 points per tyre. 4 illegal tyres on your vehicle could cost you your licence.
If you have any doubts about the tread depths please call into our workshop where we can check them for you.
