But it is not just ice and snow in which winter tyres are preferable. The British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association states that a car fitted with winter tyres braking from 62mph on a cold, wet road will stop about 16ft shorter than a regular summer tyre.

David Smith, UK managing director of tyre manufacturer Continental, says that even its massive capacity couldn’t cope with the panic buying in Britain during the Arctic conditions of the past two years: “After the weather much of the UK has enjoyed recently, cold, wet, or icy roads may not seem an imminent threat but motorists need to think ahead and decide now if they want the added safety that winter tyres bring.”

He also emphasised that although the legal minimum tread depth for any tyre is 1.6mm, once it gets below 3mm the stopping distance in an emergency increases dramatically
